  1. Import groups in objects and improve material import at fx (both from blender)

I would be very helpful to keep groups (collections or parent) at OBJ import.
AT FBX its possible to import import groups (via parent) ... but here are materials broken (no names and no connection between same color at different objects anymore).

Add bump maps for truly realistic rendering

  4. enable obj export for procedural textures as baked PNG's not PSD

At the moment some of the material textures export the texture file as a PSD. It would be usefull if there was an option for them to be exported a PNG files.

My specific application is full color 3D printing and this would mean that the files could be imported as an obj directly into the pre print preparation software without having to import to and then export from PS

  5. Open Files instead of Import

When I go to File, Open, The only optional file types are .asd or *.dn. I am trying to open a Sketchup 2019 file as per attached.

Unfortunately we don’t allow ‘open’ for any 3D model formats, only to open existing .dn saved scenes. Instead, create a new document, then use File > Import to import .fbx, .skp, stl, and .obj files.

We’ll be adding “import” files to “open” soon!

  6. Nested Objects (Import Multiple, into group/bin)

The ability to nest objects Upon import would allow me to actually use DN in a serious capacity.

Think about how solidworks nests small parts in assemblies, and assembles into complete items. Or how Premiere nests clips into sequences, or how objects group in illustrator.

I often work on single products that have tons of small screws, and hardware. I would love the ability to import multiple items (at the same time) into an assembly or group.

  8. Targa import

Targa is a very common format for texture maps. You can open them in PS and convert to PNG/JPEG but it would be nice to have them work with Dimenion right away.

  9. Is there any way to import your own custom color library?

I have a custom color library that I've created and I want to use it in combination with the materials Dimension provides. It would be great if I could choose a material and then just drag and drop my own colors on top of the material.

    Hi!
Thanks so much for the suggestion. We are very interested in supporting color in Dimension.
Could you tell us more about your workflow? Where do you usually get your color swatches? Do you use ASE files or cloud libraries or something else?

  10. Facebook 3D photos - PLEASE!

I do a lot of product photos, would love to be able to generate what is needed to make the new Facebook 3D photos.

  12. Able to set a default 'landing' location for imported objects.

When I import 3D models from Photoshop created OBJ files they currently place at seeming random coordinated at wildly different sizes. Being able to set a default set of coordinates and limiting the height of imported images would save time just getting it to the centre of the screen when importing a new object.

  13. Texturing support from Daz, marvelous and unity obj files

I'd love to see better texture support coming from DAZ, Unity, Marvelous Designer. Support for a zipped file set would be awesome. 7-zip is a great place to start for that, as they maintain their repository of developer source rather well. I've seen a lot of software implement 7-zip as a backend zip access. Baking in textures and such is very important in compositing.

    My purposes:
I do theatre work, and shoot artistic nature photos as a hobby. Both have benefited from your software suite immensely. It's so easy to understand in most instances. Dimension's basic features have helped in…

  15. Import new object to same X,Y,Z orientation as current selection

    Here is the proposed workflow:
    1. Select an object in Dimension that you've placed
    2. Go up to File>import> 3D Object and click to start the import process
    3. Imported object is set at the exact coordinates of the previously selected object, and is now the selected object in your scene.
4.You can now make minor X,Y,Z location changes to the new object in order to have it match your vision of the composition.

    Current process
    1. write down all of the coordinates for your currently selected object.
    2. Go up to File>import> 3D Object and click to start the…

Thanks for the suggestion! Very interesting. I’m curious what the core thing you’re trying to do is, though.

Do you want it to import to the same location so that it’s visible because your camera is looking one way and it’s importing behind you? Or is it more about composition, like you’re placing it near that object so want to start there?

Currently we always import objects to the origin of the scene (0,0,0) because different objects might be broken into pieces but intended to align that way. Some other options could be:
    - Import to selection as you described above
    - Import to center of current view
    - Not at import but have additional controls for “move to this object” or “center to my view” type of functionality.

Lots possible here, and none of it is particularly hard, so more understanding the why you want this.

  16. Camera bookmarks export function

it would be useful to implement a function to import the 'camera view bookmarks' from other existing projects.

At the moment we only import .obj file format. I’ve renamed your topic to Support .DWG for consideration of adding support. I will say this isn’t a common request and not a format we’re considering immediately. We are looking into supporting .stl, .iges, .step, .skp, and .fbx as our top priorities.

  19. Import ArtiosCad A3D files

I work intensely with ArtiosCad building new packaging and displays. This software would be perfect for rendering existing structures made in artios - considering this is a program for rendering packaging
