I just started digging around in Project Felix and it is kind of a huge time safer for me, as I often have to put 3D Models into pictures for clients, also for animating them further in AE and in Cinema 4D this takes a lot of time - BUT I often get the 3D models with an .mtl Material or just a Cinema 4D file.
It would be great to be able to import those models with their materials right into Project Felix.6 votes
Hello! We actually already do this (to some degree)!
If you have an .obj with an .mtl and associated textures Felix will read it and import the textures along with the file. However, there are definitely some bugs with this, we haven’t caught all the cases by any means. We do a conversion into our own material system, so the materials aren’t a direct 1-1.
What would be great is if you can submit a ticket with your file for testing. The more use cases we have, the better we can explore and fix all the cases from different programs. It would be for testing only, not distributed or used in any way. If not possible, that’s okay too, we’re working on it, but examples help!
There needs to be a way to cut or splice the model to create points that can be stretched, rotated or moved from the object separate from the rest of it.6 votes
Hello everyone! The Dimension team is very interested in the topic of creation/modeling/editing as a whole. We haven’t added any creation so far, but are actively researching this area. We have a new survey on modeling and editing and would love your thoughts on the topic!
Time factor as well as direct accessibility to images would be key for Felix if Bridge images could be imported without going through Libraries. If one works with multi-adobe-apps the library is good for some aspects as reworked files but images that are direct should not have to go through another step in order to access.6 votes
It would be amazing to be able to import skybox cubic background images and also export flattened cubic images from your final scene.6 votes
Thanks for the suggestion! I’d love to know more about your workflow or what you’re creating.
I love that this is built for designers with image backgrounds, but as a photographer this could be huge for compositing. So basically I need the reverse. I need to be able to take a masked layer (say a masked out runner) and throw them into this scene and have refraction (glass) or what not to interact with the masked layer of the runner. so the ability to bring masked layers of photos into the scene to render out with objects is what I'd love to have! I currently have to do this in C4D6 votes
Option to set bit (8, 16, 32) would be good. Right now only option 32 bit is quite overkill. Rendering time is way too long.6 votes
Thanks for the suggestion!
When importing an already textured 3D object, Felix should automatically duplicate texture files into the user's CC library of choice and automatically link the textures with the Felix file
This is so that textures that have already been applied need not be set up again in Felix.6 votes
Interesting suggestion! Definitely hooking up linked files to CC libraries would be very valuable.
Similar to Photoshop, a clickable list of the history of alterations.
I have always wanted in Photoshop (and now desire it in Felix) the ability to select some of the History and make it an "action" which I could use on other objects in scene or in new scenes.6 votes
We can add creative feature and allow to place or use as materials GIF files (Gif animations) ...also exporting them as Gif Animation6 votes
So you’d like to load a .gif as a material on the surface and export an animation of that material on the object, correct? Sounds fun! :)
When you're happy with your render but want to make a small alteration to the perspective (for example), you should be able to render straight to file, without a preview. To speed things up. This feature is common in 3D software.6 votes
Having the camera as a 3D object in the scene6 votes
I have a SpaceNavigator from 3Dconnexion and I'd like to use it for camera movement6 votes
It would be great if each product came with a template so you can open it in illustrator and create designs that fit the dimensions exactly!5 votes
Hi! We have a new survey to understand the kind of templates you would like. Please go ahead and fill it out and we will keep you posted on the progress!
Can we can we add additional pivot points? Like bottom left, top right, etc.?5 votes
This is definitely something we can do! We started with 3 for simplicity but we can add all the major points and have a way to set a custom point.
Please add two sliders for ambient occlusion, both size and intensity. The ability to add this to renderings of exterior building facades will make the renderings "pop".5 votes
Trackpad (MacBook, Magic Trackpad) Support for paning around with two fingers and rotating with two-fingers-gestures.5 votes
Definitely something we want to add support for!
I'd like to be able to use alpha channels to make certain parts reflective and other parts matte finish5 votes
Thank you for the suggestion! I’m curious if you’ve used the existing method of creating a mask for roughness/metallic properties? If so, what are your thoughts on that workflow? How do you imagine it being different?
It would be nice to have warp functions in the properties for images. I'm trying to wrap a coffee cup and the image curves upward and doesn't join at the two ends. If you could key stone the image it would accommodate for the conical nature of the cup shape.5 votes
Thanks for the suggestion! We’re actively working on improving decal and image workflows for models!
Option to export background panorama created from flat image. It is visible now is Environment Light slot (see attachment).
Based on documentation, Dimension uses Content Aware Tool known from Photoshop. It could be impemented in Photoshop as filter as well, as it is very useful feature for every designer working in 3D environment.5 votes
I'm having a very difficult time creating new materials...
I'm currently trying to create a snake skin material, but Dimension CC doesn't support MTL files????
What is the file type Adobe Dimension uses for its materials? Dimension should import MTL files as these are very common.
Edited by Moderator: Please only post ideas in proposal formats, not questions.5 votes
Dimension uses the Adobe Standard Material which is based off of the NVidia MDL language. Our supported extension is ‘.mdl’, but it does require the Adobe Standard Material type. You can create MDLs using Substance Painter and Designer at the moment.
For MTL we do have a conversion process when importing it along with an .obj but we do not have a standalone MTL importer yet. This is something we can add though. Since this is an idea based forum I’ll edit this question to be a proposal to support importing MTL materials.
