Background Layer Controls (position, rotate, scale)
Currently the background image is simply projected as is with some basic controls for choosing between scale modes (crop, fit, or scale). Controls would allow you to position, rotate, and scale the background image freely in relation to the camera.

This still isn't a thing? Nearly every other Adobe app has this functionality, why is it that we can't simply move the background image around in the frame without affecting the canvas?

Yes, I can’t believe this isn’t possible. And yes, the 3D Asset Plane object workaround only works if you don’t want the image to drop below the surface plane. We really need better controls of the background image.

How is one supposed to make a background image and the object placed into the image scaled at the correct dimension if one cannot assign a known value to an attribute in the image? This is easy to do in Illustrator, as one can draw a line of the confirmed dimension and scale the image to fit the line (if that makes sense). This feature should be an obvious one in Dimension.

if you add the 3d asset "plane"
then add your background image to that asset... file/import/place graphic on modelyou can kind of cheat the background image as a 3d scalable, movable image.

I wish it were more intuitive how to center or scale the background (zoom in and out would behelpful). A free floating background you can center and scale function would be awesome.

I would love if I could, move, reposition and most of all resize the background accordingly.
