Try selecting the camera and adjusting the field of view. The camera has a 'clipping plane' that cuts objects off that are too close to the lens and it might be that the field of view is so extreme it appears far away.

Hello all! I wanted to make a quick update on Cloud Render! This is still in the free beta period, but with our latest release (Dimension 2.3, which went live today July 16th), we’ve increased the size limit from 2000×2000 pixels to 4000×4000 pixels. Enjoy the higher resolution renders!

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

Hey Guy! Thanks for trying the beta, and glad that it's working for your projects! We'll be in public free period for a while yet as our product and services are still evolving. I don't have a specific timeline or costs I could share yet, but it will continue to be free 15 credits per month for all users at least for the remainder of 2019. I'll update again if that changes or we have more details we can share!

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

@Eli thanks for the feedback! Credits aren't purchasable at this time. We're doing a free pilot program to see how it goes. Your free 15 credits will refresh on the first of each month in the mean time.

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

@Andreas, thank you for reporting the issue. You helped us find a problem in the refreshing system which we've fixed now! Your credits have been refreshed and we gave you 10 bonus credits, thanks for bug reporting!

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

Cloud Rendering is currently in a private beta. You'll need to join the Prerelease group and download the build there. I think you should already be a member if you had access to it before:

    https://www.adobeprerelease.com/#

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

    @Bryan

We'll be adding PSD download to cloud rendering directly very soon. There's no very simple way to adjust the shadows alone without cropping them out of the main image and adjusting as a separate layer (which is much easier with the PSD selection layers). We hope to have a new build for you guys on the Prerelease in the next few weeks which will include the PSD export and some new functionality.

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

Interesting! I'm curious do you see this more as an online rendering service or a full web-based interface to do the design work?

Hello all! Happy to say Dimension 2.2 released today (April 2nd, 2019) with some updates for Decal resolution. It should be much higher across the board and also has some new controls for graphics to be placed into “fill” mode for layered graphics.

This is not a complete solution for infinite resolution rendering. When you import graphics that are vector we are currently rasterizing based on the size of the original document. Both vector and raster images still also do have an internal size limit. This is a first step to boost the quality while we work on making the graphics truly resolution independent.

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

Hey Eli! Just wanted to say that we're listening and are aware of the issue. Sorry for my English error, it happens!

We've made some changes to decals to improve their quality in the last release, and another update will be coming soon (next week) that will also improve the quality a bit. It still won't be a complete fix to making resolution independent decals, but we are getting there.

You are correct in that we haven't prioritized the 'final' fix yet as it requires a significant engineering investment that would postpone other features that we feel we need to get in. This is based on feedback from users and the number of reports of grainy decals being reduced by the partial fixes we've already put in place. We will likely not have truly resolution independent decals until next year. We're a small team and do what we can, we appreciate your patience and hope you'll enjoy the new updates coming to lighting, publishing, exporting, match image, alignment and distribution, and other things in the mean time.

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

Thanks for the feedback, Alex! Glad to hear it's improved. We do have more plans for continued improvement, but wanted to at least give partial upgrade as soon as possible since this is a very painful issue today.

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

Hey everyone, I was on break for the holidays, apologies. I believe I responded elsewhere on the Adobe forums with more details on this issue, but never re-posted here:

Decals have a resolution limit of 2048x2048 internally. However, that resolution can also be made smaller based on the MATERIAL the decal is applied to due to the way we composite the textures together and based on the UVs of the model. So if you put a 2048 decal onto a material which uses a 1024 base texture and the area of the object where you placed the decal only took up 1/2 of the UV space, your final decal resolution might be 512 or so.

Some things that can increase decal quality:
    - Use high resolution textures in your materials (4096 preferred)
    - Divide your decals to retain higher resolution for different elements
    - If you are creating your own models ensure your decal areas have a higher utilization of UV space.

We are actively working on a solution which will render decals at their native resolution, irregardless of what material they are placed on and irregardless of UV allotment. We expect this to be fixed in our next release (tentatively April, 2019).

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

It's definitely planned, but not something we've started on yet. There's a bunch of stuff going on behind the scenes that makes this area a little tricky. We will fix it, but have to wait for some components to get caught up. Once we start I will swap the status and you'll get a notification if you're subscribed.

Hi Karine! Today Publish to Web sends the 3D model to your CC Assets and creates a shared view you can send for review, but it can't be embedded or sent to other websites. This is something we're actively working on and will be possible with the next release of Dimension! Please keep your eyes open for a release coming soon.

@Tim, Have you tried our Publish to Web feature? :) It's available in the top-right corner of the application under a share icon. This will share to a web-viewer. It's a public-beta right now so doesn't have password protection or anything, but we'd love to know how this fits your needs!

.obj is the only supported file type. The new release for 0.2.0 correctly filters in the File > Import menu.

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

Hmm we definitely support .obj file format so it might be something particular to the Solidworks .obj export. If one of you could send me a sample .obj export from Solidworks I can test it out but it should work!

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

Additional file format support is one of the high priorities for Felix which is an ingestion app! From the list you pointed out I know that .stl is on our supported files roadmap. In the mean time I know there are some macros for Solidworks that add .obj file export so you could potentially use that to extend the export capabilities there.

Hi everyone! I wanted to let you know that we’ve started work on supporting more file formats. We won’t be able to address all of them at the same time. Our initial new formats we’re looking to support will be:

    .fbx
    .step
    .iges
    .stl

When these are available on prerelease I will post an update here with an invitation for you to come try it out! Thank you for the feedback!

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

Hey LP, not sure I understand. You have a rendered image from another program and want to import it to Dimension as a background. That part I got! Yes you can!

Then, once you import the image as a background you want to change the image in certain areas? Color of fabric, etc? If that's the case, unfortunately not. That's a 2D image editing operation, which is something that would be great for Photoshop. Dimension only edits 3D models and materials.

Hi Tatiana! You can still use your original textures in the Material "Base Color" slot. Just ensure your texture is exported the full UV 0-1 UV then double click the model to edit the material and drag the image into the base color slot.

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

Love the discussion that's going on here, thank you for the thoughtful and constructive conversation. Let me share what I can!

First, to the question of Dimension/Illustrator workflows.

We are planning on an initial step which would be fully a workflow in Dimension. You would provide your dielines in .ai or .eps format with your artwork and cut/fold lines all together. In Dimension CC you would import this and the technology would automatically fold/cut a 3D model directly from your design, meaning all of your artwork would be mapped to the 3D model directly.

The Fantastic Fold demo was future facing as a vision, but the actual mapping of artwork back and forth between 2D and 3D won't be on our first step. For the first iteration, if you needed to update the art you'd likely have to go back to Illustrattor, do it there, then re-import. The goal is definitely to get a smarter workflow so you can do some art placement in 3D and we'll move it back to the Illustrator file in 2D as shown in the video, but that's not the initial thing we'd be shipping.

I'd love to know peoples thoughts on that workflow. Do you think the dieline > 3D model functionality on it's own is valuable enough as a first step?

    Second, in regards to outputs.

At the moment we have a few outputs from Dimension. You can save your scene as a rendered image or you can save it to the web in a published 3D viewer. We are NOT currently planning on 3D PDF, but I do agree this is an important format. It just likely won't happen at the same time as the initial delivery of this feature. We'll work towards that, but as mentioned PDF uses a different material model, so in order to make our content look okay there, we'll need to do some work either on our side, or on the PDF standard. Discussions are in progress!

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

Hehe of course. :) No reason why not, but it always helps to know what the end goal is. Would it be enough if it was a great visualization but didn't have real-world print/package workflows? Or is that more critical for you? No right or wrong, one or the other though.

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

Great descriptions, thanks! Would you guys want to use this more for pre-vis or for final packaging / printing?

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

Very cool thank you for providing the link!

We’ve resolved some past issues of some users not being able to use Dimension, however there is a known issue still remaining.

Video cards that do not support a specific instruction set (AVX/AVX2) will not be able to run Dimension. This is primarily video cards from early 2012 or earlier.

At this time our System Requirements checker is unable to ‘catch’ this and leads to the application crashing on the Start Screen when the New Document or Get Started buttons are clicked.

At this time we are unable to fix this issue or catch to throw an error. We are continuing investigation on this.

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

If you are stuck on the start screen of Version 2.0 or 2.1 please send an e-mail to tickets@adobedimension.com so we can get some log files from you!

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

Hi kryfx96@gmail.com - that is not the same issue that's described in this post which was resolved. Unfortunately it looks like your GPU (Intel Core i3) is a bit old and not compatible with our graphics at this time.

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

We just released an 0.2.0 update and our QE team believes this issue should be addressed. Would love if some of you can try updating and testing it out.

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

factoria - can you confirm that you've updated to the 0.2.0 version in your Felix > About screen?

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

Hi Eric, I did not mean to imply we aren't working on it, simply that it might be the same symptom from a different root cause. The work we're doing will definitely resolve for Mac, but we don't have a solution for Windows yet. I have sent out some requests for users for remote sessions an we're continuing to investigate.

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

Hehe yeah, it's early days for us. We have a ton of performance improvements that we're working on with them right now. Vray itself is fast but it's all about implementation. Now that it's working it's time to bring it to the quality and speed you should expect from a brand new Adobe app.

We only support .obj at the moment but we'll be expanding the list of supported file formats. The ones we're considering at the top of the list are .fbx, and .dae, but there's a wide list we're considering. You can find ideas for all of those with the search and vote on the ones you'd like for your projects.

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

Hi Marc. I can't say exactly when, but we're actively working and currently are planning on 3 releases over 2017 (plus any small updates needed to fix bugs)!

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

Hi Kurt, thanks for the extra information. To clarify on the "beachball of death", you're able to start the application and it launches the start screen. You can play the demo video but once you click on the "Create New Project" or "Start Tour" buttons then the beachball starts spinning, is that correct?

If so, this is a known issue we've been tracking. Unfortunately it was a very elusive bug and it took some time to track down.

If that's NOT the situation where you're getting the beach ball, please provide more clarity on when it's occurring.

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

Hi Kurt! I'm very sorry about any frustration. Felix is in it's first Preview state and still has a bit of work to go for stability. However, I'll need more information before I can help. When you say it doesn't work, what do you mean?

Are you unable to download the application?
    Unable to launch it?
Does it freeze or hang or crash?
Do you see any error messages?

If you can provide me some more details about what's going on and also post your system information, that would be a great place to start!

Hey everyone. There’s been a lot of discussion here, and some of it is turning quite negative. I was going to wait, but wanted to jump in right away.

We have absolutely been listening and, as mentioned before, have GPU rendering in progress. We have our first build testing in-house right now and will be making it available on Prerelease soon.

Please, note this first release of GPU rendering will be Windows Nvidia only, on cards that support RTX raytracing technology. Plans for AMD and Mac is still in the works but won’t be happening this year.

You can join our prerelease program with this invitation link: https://www.adobeprerelease.com/beta/6D4BC437-A571-40B6-B398-1D29A4A13985/participate/7A1DBA5A-6CF2-4023-EE2F-3CA7B25DF3BE

Or if you’re already a member just visit www.adobeprerelease.com and visit the Dimension program.

We hope to upload our first GPU enabled build later this week.

Cloud rendering is in NO WAY a replacement or way to evade doing work to support…

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

The side by side comparison would be very helpful! You can send it to tickets@adobedimension.com . We can certainly make things faster, but knowing what the visual target you're looking for would be great.

    Cheers!

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

@Maxim - just a note that that is the way the resources are reported for multiple cores. For example a 4 core CPU would report up to 400%. You probably have a 10-core processor using 100%. Rendering generally uses 100% of all available resources to do it faster. We can put in a limit at % if you want!

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

I did correctly mean 2018. GPU rendering may be available late 2018 or into 2019. As some background, we are using a relatively new type of material (.MDL from Nvidia) and the V-Ray rendering engine. There's a lot of work we have to do with V-Ray to get the material fully represented. In addition we have to work with Apple since V-Ray GPU rendering is currently Windows only. There's just a lot of cross-partner work, so takes more time.

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

Well, top and what will get released are not always the same. :) GPU is one of our top priorities, it's just going to take some time. We're working on performance and improvements to the current features for our next release. You can also use this User Voice site to see what's Planned and Started.

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

Yes this is definitely something that we have planned - at the moment the VRay progressive rendering is all CPU based and this is a clear area for optimization and performance boost.

For applying to a material channel, you can double click the material to edit it, open the image for the channel (such as color, roughness) then use the file browser folder icon to browse for an image. We can certainly find a way for this to be more upleveled!

@Vic - You can 'mask' the effect by creating a black and white varition of the image where black = glossy, white = rough/matte and gray is in between variations.

Here's a tutorial that shows using a black and white image as a mask for an effect: https://helpx.adobe.com/dimension/using/apply-materials-images-to-models.html#Customizematerialandgraphicproperties

@ehong We usually only do tutorials for our software, and since Dimension (or other Adobe software) doesn't currently have liquid creation, we won't be creating any tutorials.

At the moment you'd need to use a more complete 3D suite tool such as 3ds Max, Maya, Blender, Cinema 4D, etc, and look for a tutorial for the program of your choice.

We're interested in this topic but it's not on the immediate roadmap.

We do plan on supporting more formats, there are individual ideas and voting for specific formats you'd like to request.

Ah so you're really asking for a full set of modeling tools here. :) Good to know!

Can you expand on this? Do you mean a view that shows models with wireframes? Why would this be helpful?

It'd be great to have more details on what you'd like to create and why!

It'd be great to know more about what types of modeling functionality you'd expect and why. Do you use other 3D modeling software? Would you want all the capabilities or a subset?

Yes you can import .obj file formats via the File > Import 3D Models command.
