With the announcement of the new Substance 3D Collection, I’m happy to be able to provide more insight into the plans for the future again.

The team has been hard at work building Adobe Substance 3D Stager – which is an evolution on the concept of Dimension as a professional grade staging application with new depth and workflow possibilities.

At the moment neither Dimension nor Stager run on Apple Silicon M1 devices.

We sincerely apologize for the impact to your work thus far or for those who have been unable to try these tools.  With Stager now released, getting emulation mode running as soon as possible a top priority.

We will be prioritizing investigations for M1 emulation in Stager first.  Support for Dimension is an unknown at this time.

I will provide updates as this topic moves forward.

I would agree in general that doing 3D rendering on an Air is going to kill your device probably. Supporting Silicon devices in general we want to do, but our minimum requirements remain a Mac Book Pro grade device.

So what I can say is that we did some initial effort trying to get Dimension to work on M1 emulation mode. A few engineers took a few weeks but there were some issues with the rendering engine working. Because of the time it was taking and the launch of Stager being a hard date (since it was part of a coordinated effort with multiple other apps and teams with a whole new offer) we didn't have a lot of flexibility with the Stager schedule and needed to drop the M1 work for Dimension to finish Stager.

Our team is primarily based in US which Adobe has an annual summer holiday so the entire team is on break for two weeks. When we get back in mid-July we have planning phases and M1 is marked as the highest priority topic.

However, the time for getting it working is still unknown. We did a few weeks before and had gotten stuck, and now we have to figure out how to do it for two apps. Stager and Dimension share SOME code base, but they are separate apps so we have to do it twice.

The issue last time had been in the rendering engine, but Stager has a completely new rendering engine, so it could be different work for each app.

I'll know more about how the conversation is going in July when we're back from break and digging into the topic!

I wish I could give a better time estimate, but I'd say late 2021 is the earliest we'd be looking at. Assuming July-August-September for investigations and work. And I don't know yet whether that would be Stager first or Stager/Dimension together.

I hope this adds some color to the conversation at least, if not much comfort, which I'm sorry for.

I wouldn't say that. Ps3D is a completely different code base and tech stack. Photoshop's team has their own roadmap and we haven't worked with them on this. For Dimension/Stager we actually did some work on trying to port Dimension at the beginning of the year but ran into issues getting the rendering engine specifically to work. We use a different rendering engine, so I'd say any new work we're doing for Dimension/Stager is separate from work for Ps3D.

Hey all! We’re taking a look at adding extrusion to Dimension later this year. We’re combining this with a text tool and hope to support vector/text extrusion later this year. I’ll update here as we progress!

Dimension does not yet support vectors for 3D objects or extruding, lathing, lofting, or other modeling techniques at this time. This idea is for support for implementing it so please feel free to leave specific comments on what you want to do with extruded vectors and why it's important for your workflow.

Tiago, if you have ideas that you think would round out the program to meet those needs, we'd love to hear them. It is primarily a renderer first at the moment. The creation aspect is something we're interested in, but we have no commitment to yet.

Hey everyone! Today we announced the release of a new app – Adobe Substance 3D Stager.

Stager builds on the foundation of Dimension but has a completely reworked infrastructure and is built for pro audiences.

Stager incorporates Adobe Mercury Rendering Engine – with an entire new GPU backend for Vulkan APIs that is hardware agnostic. While the first release remains GPU rendering for NVIDIA cards only we are working with AMD for GPU support as well.

You can find more information about Stager here:

I just want to note that Adobe is aware that the All Apps name and the fact that the Substance 3D Collection is a separate plan is a bit confusing.

Hundreds of people work on developing the 3D software at Adobe, so if we had included it in All Apps it would have triggered a price increase for All Apps. Because not everyone needs these tools, we felt it was better to keep them separate so you can subscribe to what you need. Any change in pricing and styling can be painful, so thank you for your patience, but our goal is to make payment more flexible to buy what you need when it comes to the pro 3D collection.

I did not mean to imply you are not professionals, apologies for that! I meant that Dimension was more general purpose - because when we were building it we were just 1 3D app at Adobe. Stager, on the other hand, is a pro staging tool focused just on staging that's been developed as part of an entire 3D ecosystem.

We didn't want to take Dimension away from everyone in All Apps so we decided to leave that there for everyone and make Stager a new app. We hope this provides a path for anyone to start learning and working in 3D with Dimension and upgrade to the 3D collection if they need a deeper and richer toolset!

@Maxim - just a note that that is the way the resources are reported for multiple cores. For example a 4 core CPU would report up to 400%. You probably have a 10-core processor using 100%. Rendering generally uses 100% of all available resources to do it faster. We can put in a limit at % if you want!

I did correctly mean 2018. GPU rendering may be available late 2018 or into 2019. As some background, we are using a relatively new type of material (.MDL from Nvidia) and the V-Ray rendering engine. There's a lot of work we have to do with V-Ray to get the material fully represented. In addition we have to work with Apple since V-Ray GPU rendering is currently Windows only. There's just a lot of cross-partner work, so takes more time.

Well, top and what will get released are not always the same. :) GPU is one of our top priorities, it's just going to take some time. Yes this is definitely something that we have planned - at the moment the VRay progressive rendering is all CPU based and this is a clear area for optimization and performance boost.

Hey Guy! Thanks for trying the beta, and glad that it's working for your projects! We'll be in public free period for a while yet as our product and services are still evolving. I don't have a specific timeline or costs I could share yet, but it will continue to be free 15 credits per month for all users at least for the remainder of 2019. I'll update again if that changes or we have more details we can share!

    @Bryan

We'll be adding PSD download to cloud rendering directly very soon. There's no very simple way to adjust the shadows alone without cropping them out of the main image and adjusting as a separate layer (which is much easier with the PSD selection layers). We hope to have a new build for you guys on the Prerelease in the next few weeks which will include the PSD export and some new functionality.

Hey everyone! I saw a good number of new questions here, so thought I’d respond to everyone with an update. Unfortunately we still don’t have true ‘vector’ support in Dimension.

Whatever ‘size’ and resolution your vector is in Illustrator is what it’s going to be applied as in Dimension. When importing to Dimension we convert it to a .png and use that.

I recommend using a minimum of about 1000×1000 size images from Ai or Ps. 2000×2000 is better. 4000×4000 is best! ;D

This quality reduction can also be cause because of the way 3D models work. The entire image you use is shared across the model and then only as a part of the canvas based on camera zoom. So you could be zooming in to part of the model and rendering it at a higher resolution than the graphic was originally.

Decal resolution can also be affected by…

Hey Eli! Just wanted to say that we're listening and are aware of the issue. Sorry for my English error, it happens!

We've made some changes to decals to improve their quality in the last release, and another update will be coming soon (next week) that will also improve the quality a bit. It still won't be a complete fix to making resolution independent decals, but we are getting there.

You are correct in that we haven't prioritized the 'final' fix yet as it requires a significant engineering investment that would postpone other features that we feel we need to get in. This is based on feedback from users and the number of reports of grainy decals being reduced by the partial fixes we've already put in place. We will likely not have truly resolution independent decals until next year. We're a small team and do what we can, we appreciate your patience and hope you'll enjoy the new updates coming to lighting, publishing, exporting, match image, alignment and distribution, and other things in the mean time.

Hey everyone, I was on break for the holidays, apologies. I believe I responded elsewhere on the Adobe forums with more details on this issue, but never re-posted here:

Decals have a resolution limit of 2048x2048 internally. However, that resolution can also be made smaller based on the MATERIAL the decal is applied to due to the way we composite the textures together and based on the UVs of the model. So if you put a 2048 decal onto a material which uses a 1024 base texture and the area of the object where you placed the decal only took up 1/2 of the UV space, your final decal resolution might be 512 or so.

Some things that can increase decal quality:
    - Use high resolution textures in your materials (4096 preferred)
    - Divide your decals to retain higher resolution for different elements
    - If you are creating your own models ensure your decal areas have a higher utilization of UV space.

We are actively working on a solution which will render decals at their native resolution, irregardless of what material they are placed on and irregardless of UV allotment. We expect this to be fixed in our next release (tentatively April, 2019).

It's definitely planned, but not something we've started on yet. There's a bunch of stuff going on behind the scenes that makes this area a little tricky. Additional file format support is one of the high priorities for Felix which is an ingestion app! From the list you pointed out I know that .stl is on our supported files roadmap. In the mean time I know there are some macros for Solidworks that add .obj file export so you could potentially use that to extend the export capabilities there.

Hey LP, not sure I understand. You have a rendered image from another program and want to import it to Dimension as a background. That part I got! Yes you can!

Then, once you import the image as a background you want to change the image in certain areas? Color of fabric, etc? If that's the case, unfortunately not. That's a 2D image editing operation, which is something that would be great for Photoshop. Dimension only edits 3D models and materials.

Love the discussion that's going on here, thank you for the thoughtful and constructive conversation. Let me share what I can!

First, to the question of Dimension/Illustrator workflows.

We are planning on an initial step which would be fully a workflow in Dimension. You would provide your dielines in .ai or .eps format with your artwork and cut/fold lines all together. In Dimension CC you would import this and the technology would automatically fold/cut a 3D model directly from your design, meaning all of your artwork would be mapped to the 3D model directly.

The Fantastic Fold demo was future facing as a vision, but the actual mapping of artwork back and forth between 2D and 3D won't be on our first step. For the first iteration, if you needed to update the art you'd likely have to go back to Illustrattor, do it there, then re-import. The goal is definitely to get a smarter workflow so you can do some art placement in 3D and we'll move it back to the Illustrator file in 2D as shown in the video, but that's not the initial thing we'd be shipping.

I'd love to know peoples thoughts on that workflow. Do you think the dieline > 3D model functionality on it's own is valuable enough as a first step?

    Second, in regards to outputs.

At the moment we have a few outputs from Dimension. You can save your scene as a rendered image or you can save it to the web in a published 3D viewer. We are NOT currently planning on 3D PDF, but I do agree this is an important format. It just likely won't happen at the same time as the initial delivery of this feature. We'll work towards that, but as mentioned PDF uses a different material model, so in order to make our content look okay there, we'll need to do some work either on our side, or on the PDF standard. Discussions are in progress!

Hehe of course. :) No reason why not, but it always helps to know what the end goal is. Would it be enough if it was a great visualization but didn't have real-world print/package workflows? Or is that more critical for you? No right or wrong, one or the other though.

@Vic - You can 'mask' the effect by creating a black and white varition of the image where black = glossy, white = rough/matte and gray is in between variations.

@ehong We usually only do tutorials for our software, and since Dimension (or other Adobe software) doesn't currently have liquid creation, we won't be creating any tutorials.

At the moment you'd need to use a more complete 3D suite tool such as 3ds Max, Maya, Blender, Cinema 4D, etc, and look for a tutorial for the program of your choice.

We're interested in this topic but it's not on the immediate roadmap.

Hello everyone! I wanted to thank you for a lot of patience on the topic of creation and modeling in Dimension. I thought I’d provide a small update here.

Dimension 3.2 just released with our first native creation features, including text and basic shapes.

In the future we do expect to have some more creation like vector extrusion and lathing, but don’t have a release timeline for that yet.

I will l say we are also working on some cool mesh editing capabilities, so you can customize models instead of having to start from scratch.

I hope to update here soon with more progress, but in the mean time, I hope you enjoy text and shapes!

    @MixedMerch

I definitely recommend checking out our Prerelease program for your last two requests. Sketchup support and clearer canvas/DPI controls are implemented: https://www.adobeprerelease.com/#

We do plan on supporting more formats, there are individual ideas and voting for specific formats you'd like to request.

Ah so you're really asking for a full set of modeling tools here. :) Good to know!

Can you expand on this? Do you mean a view that shows models with wireframes? Why would this be helpful?

It'd be great to have more details on what you'd like to create and why!

It'd be great to know more about what types of modeling functionality you'd expect and why. Do you use other 3D modeling software? Would you want all the capabilities or a subset?

Yes you can import .obj file formats via the File > Import 3D Models command.

No real status update yet. It's certainly something we can do, but just hasn't been a high enough priority since we're so early. Focusing on larger things that affect the most users and 3D mice aren't very common. We don't have tablet support yet either, so definitely an area we'll want to add eventually.

It's not something we're actively looking at right now. We still have a lot of work to do on some basics. When we start marking things as planned or started you'll get a status update to any ideas you vote and subscribe to.

The camera perspective X, Y, and Z properties are found in the environment object > camera perspective properties area.

We'll be making updates to that to make the camera it's own object and can look into making it share-able between sessions. You could delete the 3D content and then save the empty .dn scene with some saved bookmarks as a template for now.

    Cheers!

Thanks for the suggestion! Very interesting. I’m curious what the core thing you’re trying to do is, though.

Do you want it to import to the same location so that it’s visible because your camera is looking one way and it’s importing behind you? Or is it more about composition, like you’re placing it near that object so want to start there?

Currently we always import objects to the origin of the scene (0,0,0) because different objects might be broken into pieces but intended to align that way. Some other options could be:
    - Import to selection as you described above
    - Import to center of current view
    - Not at import but have additional controls for “move to this object” or “center to my view” type of functionality.

Lots possible here, and none of it is particularly hard, so more understanding the why you want this.

Hi Chelsi! Unfortunately this platform doesn't have editing or adding once the post is made. You can just re-pose since this is a new idea and I'll merge this conversation into the new post. Apologies for the hassle!
