Hey all! We’re taking a look at adding extrusion to Dimension later this year. We’re combining this with a text tool and hope to support vector/text extrusion later this year. I’ll update here as we progress!

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

Dimension does not yet support vectors for 3D objects or extruding, lathing, lofting, or other modeling techniques at this time. This idea is for support for implementing it so please feel free to leave specific comments on what you want to do with extruded vectors and why it's important for your workflow.

Tiago, if you have ideas that you think would round out the program to meet those needs, we'd love to hear them. It is primarily a renderer first at the moment. The creation aspect is something we're interested in, but we have no commitment to yet.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! We (Adobe as a whole) are considering the next generation of User Interfaces, so this is a discussion that is being taken very seriously across the company. I’d love specific examples of the things you like to dock/undock and why.

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

I love the AR/VR discussions. It's really getting into interacting with your content in the reality in which you'd view it, which is awesome. I can't speak too much to details yet, but there's a lot going on with AR/VR strategy at Adobe. We definitely see an AR/VR editing mode, AR/VR outputs, etc, as part of our story, but I'm not sure when that story will start to evolve.

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

Agreed, for Ps and Ai they work really well. Those applications have a lot of pallets. Some of the newer applications are trying to have less pallets that are more contextual, for example a single properties panel instead of properties, info, color, character, paragraph, etc and a single assets panel instead of color, swatches, materials, etc.

For example, within Felix, are there any particular pallets you'd want to reorganize, rearrange, undock, and why?

Thanks for the suggestion! Just to be sure I understand you're talking about text on a surface like a poster, package, etc, correct? Not 3D text?

Thanks for the details, definitely helps. I've forwarded this to our lead designer (he's working on some of this area right now) so we'll see what we can do. :)

Yes, just wasn't sure if that's what you were referring to or more about multiple viewports, etc. There is another post for supporting common 3D app setups, so just wanted to be sure it's the same. :) I'll merge this over!

@Steven - just click the "Vote" button on the top-left if you're viewing on the website. You can also vote in the Project Felix feedback panel inside the application (the comment icon in the top right). Comments are great though! Thanks for posting your thoughts here for others to see!

Hey everyone, Jeanette with the Dimension team here. We are conducting a survey all about 3D Characters!

This survey takes 10 minutes to complete. The survey will remain open until Friday, March 22nd at 12:00 PM PT.

Here is the link for the survey:
    https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/FXGB5PD

At the end of the survey, you will have the option to indicate whether you are interested in participating in a 60-minute, 1:1 research interview about 3D characters. Selected participants will receive a $100 USD Amazon gift card as a thank you for their time, upon completion of the interview.

Great! Thanks for the details on what you're looking for, Anton. We'll definitely keep you guys up to date as we move forward with Fuse. :)

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

Would love some more specific feedback on this! Do you want to... animate it in Felix? 3D paint? Rig and pose? Why? What types of things do you hope to create?

Great suggestion. You can currently do 3D painting in Photoshop and then export the model as an .obj file so I think the key here with this request is to have a more live-linked experience. Could you talk more about what you’d want there?

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

@fotogestaltung - I'd love to know more about your workflow and why you want a 1-1 3D scene in both applications. This isn't currently something we're planning because it would require basically putting everything Felix has inside of Photoshop. We built Felix as a standalone app to really deliver a great experience, so we're looking more at live-linking between the apps. Would love your thoughts on why that might not be enough.

Very interesting topic. I think cloth simulation could be really fun to play with and definitely makes a lot of sense to have in some aspect. Thanks for attaching your example image, that’s very helpful.

I’d love to hear what other people think of this too.

Of course! Please send to jmathews @ adobe.com and it will only be used for testing purposes and deleted after.

Hmm hmm! Interesting! More information during loading is definitely possible and something we've discussed a bit internally. I'll check in and see what we can do there. 30 minutes for a loading is a little insane though, so likely something with the file that it couldn't read. Any chance you can share the file or it's specs? Polycount, mesh count, number of materials, number of textures, resolution of textures, that kind of thing? We've tested upwards of 15 million polygons and usually get about 2-3 minute imports.

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

Hm, seems like the screenshot didn't attach correctly. For loading 3D models we do have a dialogue window that pops up to tell you the app is loading. Did that window pop up at all? Or did it never come up? Or just never close 30 minutes later?

Yes, we are an ingestion app, so we plan to support all the major file formats in time. DAE is a good format but it's wildly inconsistent between authors and platforms. We kind of hate DAE too. ;) That's why we made .ASD as both our file format and object format. Because each format has it's own prerequisites for support, it's best if you post each file format you'd be interested in as an idea or vote on the existing ones (IE, .dae, .fbx, .step, .stl). That way we can track interest in each type.

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

At the moment we only support .obj file import. There is a bug in the import menu which is not properly filtering to only supported file types, sincere apologies for the confusion!

Awesome, thanks for the additional details on your workflows. We're working on implementing a first pass (hah) of render passes which will probably include object and material ID passes with selections made through Photoshop but I definitely see the benefit of the workflow you mentioned, David. I've used that process a few times myself, especially when working with things like hair that aren't easy to recreate the selections in Photoshop. The goal is definitely to support both of these eventually.

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

How do you set it up so that the objects are separated? Do you render out more of a material ID pass and then make selections from the ID pass (material ID pass, light pass, reflection pass)?

Hi again Scott! Can you clarify when you say open and edit a texture in Felix? Do you mean having 2D painting, layering, etc directly in Felix? Since we're part of Creative Cloud would an "Edit in Photoshop" possibly give you that same control (if not more)? Is there a reason you'd prefer it in Felix or in Photoshop? Which? Why?

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

Interesting. Photoshop has a built in UV viewer, so you can already open any .obj file format model as a 3D layer and then turn on the UV view when you open the texture but you think it would be more helpful to have Felix send the UV layout as an image?

Hello everyone. Excited to say we’ve started some investigations for adding text to Dimension later this year. We’re initially looking at 3D text but may also include 2D text or decal text in the future. I’ll update here as we progress!

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

Hello! There is no text tools or typography kit yet, but it's definitely something we want to explore. I'd love to know specific tools and functionality you'd be looking for and what type of workflows you're interested in. Merging this into an existing topic!

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

Great suggestion. It'd be great to know what types of things you'd like to do with text when you say 'flat'. Do you want it to be as part of the background or floating on the foreground or in the 3D scene?

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

3D Text could be fun! What types of features would you like with that, do you think? Any examples of the types of 3D text/type you'd like to make?

Yes, I understand the premise for your request! What types of things would you expect to be usable across different objects though? For example, 'selections' probably couldn't be reused as selection is different for every model. We probably could save things like "apply material, edit material properties", etc. But I'm not sure if that's the best way to approach that. A paintbucket tool might be more efficient.

So what types of specific actions would you want to use across models?
    - Selections?
    - Material applications?
    - Transformations (rotate/move/scale)?

AdminJeanette Mathews (Product Manager, Dimension) commented  ·

Can you go into more detail about how you'd like to make history into an action? Since the history stack is constantly changing I'd love to know what type of reusability you'd expect.

We don't have an exact list of file formats yet, but the ones we're considering first are .dae, .stl and .fbx as they are widely used and will allow us to start supporting some more advanced features.

A unified 3D format is something the entire industry is working towards, Pixar's USD and Microsoft 3MF are examples of this.
