Hey all! We’re taking a look at adding extrusion to Dimension later this year. We’re combining this with a text tool and hope to support vector/text extrusion later this year. I’ll update here as we progress!

    Jeff Korzeniowski commented  ·

also add the ability to lathe a vector object.. Definitely a plus.

    Jeff Korzeniowski commented  ·

both extrude and revolve are needed.. and any others that go along with basic vector building.

    Jmi,
Sharing 3D files for your needs do not necessarily fit others needs.. We need 3DPDF. We have customers that require it.. We have asked for them to go the browser route and they prefer 3D PDF. SO it is untrue that 3D PDF files aren't a good format. Its a format that you do not require. Better or not, these are our needs.
I do also want 3D PDF and a good browser viewer to be top on the list. But to not include 3D PDF because you don't want it is not a good argument.

    Jeff Korzeniowski commented  ·

Totally agree with Tim.. 3D PDF is on my top list of outputs.

    Jeff Korzeniowski commented  ·

Project Fantastic Fold looks amazing.. (I think there was a little tear in my eye just then)

Here are my thoughts on what I see so far. Jonny and Tim have the same desires as me.
    1. Love the distribute functionality.. place once for all panels. Question. What if an object is not dependent on a single surface. It could wrap from the top panel to the side panel.. Or.. a band could wrap all the way around a box.
    2. auto masking along edges is great.. this is good for 3D but if we need to use the graphics in actual artwork itself (the main reason for having this) can we get an option for bleeds over scores. maybe an add bleed button???? or bleed is based on a setting.. editable later
    3. if the packaging world only worked in flat paper we would be in trouble. can you simulate a fluted corrugated box? box material could be upwards of a quarter inch thick.. can this be added to the simulation?
    4. Will this retain all colors modes, spot colors etc.. Will by AI file be usable after? Does it convert to RGB?
    5. assuming we can design our own structures, we need to be able to assign cut crease and then assign fold angles.
    6. What about bags? Packaging includes flexible bags as well.. Probably too soon to do but think about things like potato chip bags, candy bar wrappers. Those items are not based on simple folds they are dynamically molded around an object inside. Also, there are lots of Shrink packaging labels and packaging. Think bottled water packs and odd shaped shrink sleeve labels for shampoo bottles etc.. Possibilities are endless.
    7. File needs to be dynamically updated.. an edit in illustrator should update in Dimension.
    8. WHITE INK.. for clear packaging. Think Pen boxes at Staples... This needs a white ink layer in order for ink to show accurately. the ability to layer our inks and modify our ink parameters would be great.. add gloss, bump patters, refractions etc. layer the order of inks as needed.. White first, cyan and then maybe a spot blue as an example.
    9. The ability to Link and open the illustrator file right from within Dimensions.
    10. the ability to preview the file within illustrator without having dimensions open (preview window). This way when we have a model done and complete we can preview the file quickly without needing to keep updating and going back to dimensions. I dont want to see 3D options in illustrator.. just a preview window showing what it would look like.
    11. Like Mark said below.. Multipart elements.. lots of packaging contain multi parts.. think Displays in stores or boxes with inserts. Maybe create a scene in Dimensions and load in Illustrator.. have the ability to open all illustrator files associated with the 3D scene.. update ai files as needed and the scene will update.
12.. So much more to come. So excited for this. Been waiting for this type of integration since I started workin in Illustrator '88.. No joking.. the Packaging industry has been wanting this for years.. Now all we need is a decent way to add measurements to our cad files.

Thank you so much for the effort and can't wait to try out these new features.

    Jeff Korzeniowski commented  ·

This is exactly what I would be looking for... The Packaging industry is in desperate need for an all in one solution from Adobe.

    Jeff Korzeniowski commented  ·

The way i would want something like this to work is using Ai to create die-lines. The cuts and creases are spot colors which are interpreted by "Dimension" when placed. To edit folds etc, you could edit the "placed" model which should be a live link. Once its brought in you can select your lines and change fold angles as necessary.. still...all live. A better way of managing images is to open dieline in illustrator and it allows you to drop your artwork onto your die file. saving would update. Spot colors would indicate what objects are. graphics would now be included and fully editable. just a start

Jeff Korzeniowski supported this idea  ·
    Jeff Korzeniowski commented  ·

This would be a great addition.. Illustrator spot colored strokes from the die would indicate a fold or a cut. There are already other companies who do this with illustrator with plugins... Esko Studio and IC3D are 2 most common for packaging. Using spots called "varnish" and "foil" etc.. could allow you to manage the spot varnish, embossing and foiling effects.

    Jeff Korzeniowski commented  ·

Im in the packaging industry as well. I use IC3D and Studio daily. Both have their strengths and weaknesses.. i would love to see some of the art "mapping" features as well. Better yet, the ability to select an Illustrator file and use it directly to map to the object.. if the Illustrator file changes, they mapped file would ask to update. so many things i would like to see added, not enough time to explain. See the Esko or IC3D websites for more info on what the packaging industry is looking for.

Hello everyone! I know it’s been quiet on the GPU side of things for a while now. I wanted to let you know it’s been actively under the works for a bit, but a lot going on behind the scenes. Here’s what I can say so far!

In Dimension 2.0 we’ve launched an entire new rendering engine, the Adobe Dimension Renderer. This is an in-house rendering engine which allows us to have more direct control over many things. We’re actively working on GPU support and have our first beta proof for the RTX cards, demoed at Adobe MAX last week:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4zNBOYcD1s

This includes an overhaul to being able to interact with the render mode, so thinking about both rendering during design work and as final renders. We’re still working on this and are looking to port the technologies to new cards and platforms (AMD, Mac Metal, etc.)

    In…

    Jeff Korzeniowski commented  ·

Ah, makes sense.. Will Apples metal 2 be used as well? I'd rather wait and get great performance than have it rushed out.. Maybe by this time next year we can really put Dimension to the test!! Until then hopefully we can get the ability to create our own materials, lights etc... time will tell.

    Jeff Korzeniowski commented  ·

Jeanette, you posted "No time estimate to share at this point on GPU rendering. We’re actively exploring but there are a lot of components and it’s not likely to happen for 2018." Do you mean 2017 or are you saying that GPU will not be out untill 2019? This seems to be a long time away.

    Jeff Korzeniowski commented  ·

Being someone who has to work with CPU rendering, i can't wait till i can utilize my 1080ti. Please, please, please make it a priority!!

Hi everyone! I wanted to let you know that we’ve started work on supporting more file formats. We won’t be able to address all of them at the same time. Our initial new formats we’re looking to support will be:

    .fbx
    .step
    .iges
    .stl

When these are available on prerelease I will post an update here with an invitation for you to come try it out! Thank you for the feedback!

Hello everyone! Just wanted to say we are starting work on some lighting features this year. While I don’t know the full scope of what we’ll be able to release this year yet, some areas we’re exploring are:

More directional lights (like the sun) with a lightpainting interface to create custom environment lights.

Improvements to our Match Image feature to be able to detect and generate multiple indoor lights.

Improvements to glow materials to make them more expressive.

Additions of haze, environmental atmosphere, etc.

Last, but not least, actual 3D placed light objects.

I’ll update here when we have a more scoped vision or a prototype for testing! :)

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! We (Adobe as a whole) are considering the next generation of User Interfaces, so this is a discussion that is being taken very seriously across the company. I’d love specific examples of the things you like to dock/undock and why.

    Jeff Korzeniowski commented  ·

As for pallets.. all of them! Especially the preview window. I would like my workspace (3D working area) as large as possible. I would assume most users who work in 3D as well as vector/photo applications use multiple monitors. if you are designing this application for the basic home user with a single monitor then its not an issue but assuming you are trying to create a pro application then we need the flexibility. As for utilizing pallet space better, i agree less is better but i can't have it cover up my working area. This is the biggest issue i have with a lot of the new applications coming out today. They are dumbing them down because its easier to write them that way.

    Jeff Korzeniowski commented  ·

What to do? Handle just like Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.. those are perfect implementations of how pallets are docked/undocked.. Would expect the same snapping and grouping together ability as well. the ability to save workspaces is an added plus.

Hey all, just wanted to give a little update on Animation for Dimension. We believe animation is an important part of working with 3D and do plan to include animation features in the future, however it will not be for 2019. Likely this will start in 2020 but I’ll update as we get closer!

Hello all! I wanted to make a quick update on Cloud Render! This is still in the free beta period, but with our latest release (Dimension 2.3, which went live today July 16th), we’ve increased the size limit from 2000×2000 pixels to 4000×4000 pixels. Enjoy the higher resolution renders!
